The following actions can help when the marriage/relationship has lost its luster, when one partner seems oblivious or does not seem to care.
Here are four actions that one person can do
- Stay committed to the relationship: This is perhaps the most important. Even if the other person has checked out and even if there are challenges in the relationship, the commitment to stay with the partner is often helpful. It is difficult but taking it one day at a time is easier and a doable goal.
- Continue to show respect to each other. Respect is one of the mainstays of a good relationship, so continuing to show the same respect. Remember not to bad mouth the partner/ spouse if children are present. Remember not to show the frustration with the partner/ spouse in public, in front of friends and family.
- Be Mindful and aware of the pattern of communication. Discover if both partners are being defensive, sarcastic, argumentative, dismissive etc. Decide to change this particular dance and modify the steps.
- Leave the Ego behind. Apologizing after an argument does not bruise the ego. It is not a competition, marriage/ relationship often requires ‘togetherness’.
