Every year millions of people start the New year with Resolutions to eat well, lose weight, exercise more, etc etc and most of the time these resolutions do not last. If this has happened to you, don't despair. Its not because people lack the will to stick to the resolution or because they succumb to temptation, laziness or anything else. The reason has to do with the underlying belief about keeping resolutions.
So this new Year, if you start with a Resolution, lets look at how best to keep it.
1 . Lets start with compassion for self and leave the critical self judgement in 2017. Don't carry it over to 2018. I would highly recommend self compassion exercises to start the year if you engage in harsh self criticisms. Check out the research by Dr. Neff.self-compassion.org/
2. Gratitude for what we have is the second step . Again, research has shown that developing gratitude is key to lasting self change. emmons.faculty.ucdavis.edu/gratitude-and-well-being/ Start a daily gratitude practice.
3. Take small steps, Celebrate your success. But also push yourself where you can. Of course this requires self acceptance and knowing yourself.
4. Keep at it, Success involves staying with missteps as well.
